Benning solar power project groundbreaking<\/a>\r\n<blockquote style=\"font-size:100%\">\r\n<p>\r\nFort Benning held a groundbreaking ceremony for the U.S. Army&#8217;s\r\nrenewable energy solar project. Georgia Power is building solar\r\npanels that will cover 200 acres on the post.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nThe solar project on Fort Benning will be the army&#8217;s largest power\r\nproject in Georgia.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nThe panels will generate <!--more-->\r\n\r\n30 megawatts of energy. Georgia Power\r\nofficials said that serves around 11,000 customers.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nPeople in charge of the project said it will be helpful to have\r\nrenewable energy as an extra source power especially during natural\r\ndisasters. They said solar energy will help the army be ready\r\nwhenever they are needed.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nKatherine Hammack, Assistant Secretary of the Army, said solar\r\nenergy will cut down on the army&#8217;s energy costs. She says they could\r\nuse some of the army&#8217;s energy budget for training soldiers.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nCongressman Sanford Bishop said cutting energy costs helps taxpayers\r\nin the end.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n&#8220;A more efficient, effective operation is a win-win for everyone.\r\nFor our community, national security, and for our country,&#8221; said\r\nCongressman Bishop.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nAnd more construction jobs than either the Sabal Trail or Palmetto\r\npipelines will ever bring to Georgia.\r\n<blockquote style=\"font-size:100%\">\r\n<p>\r\nThe project is part of a commitment by the U.S. Army to the\r\nPresident to secure one gigawatt of renewable energy and\r\nsustainability at U.S. Army installations by 2025.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nAnd\r\nthe Air Force has a goal of \r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2012\/02\/solar-thermal-for-moody-afb.html\">\r\n&#8220;25% of Air Force facility energy use comes from renewable energy sources by 2025&#8221;<\/a>.\r\n<p>\r\nBoth goals need to be higher and faster, but they&#8217;re both good starts.\r\n<p>\r\n -jsq\r\n<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"First of three 30 MW military solar projects in Georgia, the other two ag Fort Gordon near Augusta and Fort Stewart near Savannah, plus a fourth one at Kings Bay Submarine Base.
