\r\n\r\n<\/a>\r\n\r\nKeep Lowndes-Valdosta Beautiful<\/a> did cleanups in wetlands in\r\nboth the Withlacoochee and the Alapaha River watersheds, plus\r\nat exit 22, and the general illegal trash dumping situation came up.\r\nDid the county change the speed limit on your road?\r\n\r\nThe County Engineer said only in one area<\/a>, but they didn’t publish the list.\r\nAlso discussed\r\nwere\r\na\r\n\r\nGEMA grant application<\/a>, a\r\n\r\nproposal for engineering services for Exits 22 and 29<\/a>,\r\n\r\nHVAC for county buildings<\/a>, and a\r\n\r\nliquor license<\/a>.\r\nHere’s\r\nthe agenda<\/a>\r\nwith links to the videos and a few notes.\r\n

    \r\nVideo.<\/a>\r\nKLVB always does a good presentation, and this time they sent their\r\nChairman, Carl Onyeka<\/a>, their Executive Director, Aaron Strickland, and a board member (not sure which one).\r\nTheir cleanup at the wetland at Ricardo Street and N. Forrest Street\r\nwas right at the top of the watershed of Onemile Creek, in the Withlacoochee River watershed, where Carl Onyeka said they picked up about 500 pounds of litter,\r\nincluding sixteen tires. “People just love to dump tires in this area,” he said.\r\nTheir other location, on Inner Perimeter Road between Lakeland Highway and US 84, is in a wetland that drains into Upper Mud Swamp Creek, which goes into the Alapahoochee River, and then into the Alapaha River.\r\nHe said they had sixteen volunteers and picked up another 500 pounds of trash.\r\nAnd they had a chipper event, in which they chipped up dead trees for fish habitats\r\nand mulch, in four locations, with 24 volunteers.\r\nThey just started a new Project Glove, with sixteen volunteers\r\nat the overpass on North Valdosta Road at exit 22, picking up 100 pounds of litter and a TV monitor.\r\n

    \r\nAnd on April 11th they had scheduled an electronics recycling event,\r\nand on April 25th their Great America Cleanup.\r\nHe didn’t say any dates for the past events.\r\nTheir calendar<\/a>\r\nsays the chipper event was January 5th.\r\n

    \r\nLowndes County Chairman Bill Slaughter thanked KLVB for cleaning up at the “gateways”,\r\nreferring to exit 22.\r\nCommissioner Demarcus Marshall mentioned the illegal dumping happening\r\nwithin the county and asked if there was anything else the county\r\ncould do to help.\r\nCarl Onyeka said Aaron Strickland had been involved with that,\r\nand it’s a big problem with no places for citizens to take trash.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

        \r\nThe proposed project would be 100% grant funded.  Lowndes County would not be required to budget any additional funding.<\/em>\t\t\r\n

        \r\nVideo.<\/a>\r\nProjects to be considered have to be regional in nature,\r\nnot just for Lowndes County or a local agency.\r\nThe grant application is for $60,000 for a mobile operations center.\r\nAdding to the existing communications vehicle, this one would be a mobile conference room where all the\r\nvarious agency and department heads could get together to formulate\r\na plan of action.\r\nWould have been useful for example at the recent Langdale tornado,\r\nor at a big wild fire.\r\nAir conditioned and climate controled, so also useful for rest and rehab,\r\nor even for the hostage negotiation team.\r\nIt’s a reimbursement grant: purchase the vehicle and then get reimbursed\r\nby the state.\r\nCommission Scottie Orenstein wanted to know if the grant covered everything.\r\nYes, except for maintenance.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

Attached is a copy of the updated\r\nSpeed Zone Ordinance with the changes that were requested by Lowndes\r\nCounty. With the execution of this Ordinance, the speed limits on\r\nthese roads will be updated. A signed copy of the Ordinance will be\r\nforwarded to the Department of Public Safety for the updated radar\r\npermit for Lowndes County.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n\"6.c.<\/a>\r\n

        \r\nVideo.<\/a>\r\nCounty Engineer Mike Fletcher said only change is\r\nto lower the speed limit around the Old Quitman Highway area from\r\n65 to 60 MPH.\r\nCommissioner Demarcus Marshall wanted to know what the process would be for\r\nany other speed limit.\r\nWould have to do speed study and send it off to the state for approval.\r\n<\/p>\r\n
