Researchers say the new technology offers a safe\r\nalternative to many commercial batteries in wide use today.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n&#8220;We have developed a rechargeable aluminum battery that may replace\r\nexisting storage devices, such as alkaline batteries, which are bad\r\nfor the environment, and lithium-ion batteries, which occasionally\r\nburst into flames,&#8221; said Hongjie Dai, a professor of chemistry at\r\nStanford. &#8220;Our new battery won&#8217;t catch fire, even if you drill\r\nthrough it.&#8221;\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nAlthough drilling would produce aluminum dust, which isn&#8217;t exactly benign.\r\nHowever, point taken.\r\n<p>\r\nPersonally, I still prefer<!--more-->\r\n\r\n the\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2014\/01\/organic-battery-with-no-metals-harvard-seas.html\">Harvard inorganic aqueous flow battery<\/a>.\r\n<p>\r\nBut the main point is that projects like this and\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2015\/02\/tesla-opening-market-for-home-solar-batteries.html\">Tesla&#8217;s home-sized battery<\/a>\r\nare opening an energy storage research and sales market\r\nthat will produce much better (cheaper, cleaner, faster)\r\nstorage methods than we have now,\r\nand thus facilitate converting from fossil fuels to sun, wind, and wave power\r\neven faster.\r\n<p>\r\nPS: Thanks to John Pate.\r\n<p>\r\n -jsq\r\n<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Another entrant in the battery race to clean energy storage.
