CEOA-endorsed candidates took\nthree out of four seats today, with the fourth candidate narrowly missing\na majority with 49.47% of votes cast.\n<p>\nOnly 1.3% of eligible customers voted, with 2471 votes being cast. Winners\nwere:\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.accountablecobbemc.com\/candidates.html\">\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\"   width=\"92\" height=\"104\" src=\"http:\/\/takebackcobbemc.com\/Screen%20Shot%202011-10-24%20at%2011.16.45%20AM.png\"><\/a>\n<blockquote>\nArea 1, Ed Crowell 79%\n<br>\nArea 6, David Tennant 68%\n<br>\nArea 10, Cheryl Meadows 80%\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\nHm, 4 to 1 odds!\nThat reminds me of\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/11\/the-grass-roots-effort-outspent-by-a-10-to-1-margin-defeat-the-cuee-effort-by-4-to-1-jim-parker.html\">\nanother recent election.<\/a>\nApparently when the people get organized fat cats can lose big.\nCobb EMC&#8217;s incumbents already\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/09\/cobb-emc-loses-special-election-by-huge-margin.html\">\nlost a special election back in September,<\/a>\nthat one about mail-in voting.\n<p>\nAbout the Cobb EMC runoff,\nKim Isaza wrote for MDJonline.com today,\n<a href=\"http:\/\/mdjonline.com\/view\/full_story\/16417716\/article-EMC-members-elect-3-new-directors--Area-7-goes-to-runoff?instance=home_news_left\">\nEMC members elect 3 new directors; Area 7 goes to runoff<\/a>\n\n<!--more-->\n<blockquote>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.accountablecobbemc.com\/candidates.html\">\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\"   width=\"99\" height=\"145\" src=\"http:\/\/takebackcobbemc.com\/Screen%20Shot%202011-10-24%20at%2011.17.17%20AM.png\"><\/a>\nThe runoff comes in the area 7 race. Charles Malcolm \u2018Cooter\u2019 Swanson\nalmost won outright in the seven-person field, earning 1,203 votes,\nor 49.47 percent.\n<p>\nIncumbent RJ Patel came in a distant second, earning 354 votes, or\n14.56 percent.\n<p>\nNext were Karen Thornburgh, with 276 votes (11.35 percent); Paul Phillips,\nwith 212 votes (8.72 percent); Dr. Larry Baker, with 168 votes (6.91\npercent); Charles Spann, 144 votes (5.92 percent); and William Cominos,\n75 votes (3.08 percent). Cominos did not attend the 10 a.m. meeting to\naddress members.\n<p>\nSwanson, who owns a screen-printing business, needed only about 13 more\nvotes to win outright, and acknowledged he was disappointed.\n<p>\n\u201cI would have liked this to be done and over with. But the EMC\u2019s\nworth fighting for, so I\u2019m willing to keep on,\u201d he said.\n<\/blockquote>\nAnd Patel has not conceded.\nSo we&#8217;ll see.\n<p>\nThis doesn&#8217;t look good for Patel:\n<blockquote>\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/01\/pro-coal-electric-co-exec-indicted.html\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\"   src=\"http:\/\/www.southernstudies.org\/assets_c\/2011\/01\/dwight_brown_cobb_emc-thumb-250x314.jpg\"><\/a>\nBut Phillips, another of the area 7 candidates, took shots at Patel\nduring the 10 a.m. meeting of members, criticizing Patel for his votes\nto seek to rehire embattled and indicted chief executive Dwight Brown,\nand to pay Brown a hefty consulting fee of $59,000 a month.\n<\/blockquote>\nAh, yes,\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/01\/pro-coal-electric-co-exec-indicted.html\">indicted Dwight Brown<\/a>\nwho\n<a href=\"http:\/\/mdjonline.com\/view\/full_story\/12888074\/article-ADA-appeals-tossing-of-Brown-s-indictment\">got off on a technicality.\n<p>\nSo we&#8217;ll see at least three new faces on the\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/08\/about-as-fruitful-as-trying-to-squeeze-information-out-of-the-kremlin.html\">\nKremlin wall<\/a>,\nand maybe four.\nHm, how many directors are there?\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cobbemc.com\/en\/About-Cobb-EMC\/Directors.aspx\">\nTen<\/a>, so even four new ones is not a majority.\nIt could be enough to bring some sense to that board\nwhile waiting for the next election to get enough on there\nto tear down the Kremlin wall.\n<p>\n-jsq\n<p>\nPS: Owed to Ellen Corrie and <a href=\"http:\/\/takebackcobbemc.com\/Screen%20Shot%202011-10-24%20at%2011.17.17%20AM.png\">\nNo Coal Plant in Ben Hill County!<\/a>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Cobb EMC wants to build a coal plant in Ben Hill County, about as far from here as the smoke blows as the Okefenokee Swamp.
