\r\nPotential fracking in north Georgia was too close,\r\nbut what about right here in south Georgia?\r\nFlorida has a snowballing anti-fracking movement.\r\nLooks like Georgia needs one, too.\r\n

\r\nJim Kennedy, the state’s geologist, says another company is\r\nconsidering the shale gas fields of the Mesozoic Basin that covers\r\n60 percent of the Coastal Plain in South Georgia.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

\r\nMost of the story is about proposed fracking in north Georgia\r\nthat\r\n\r\nwe noted back in 2013<\/a>,\r\nplus fossil fuel industry propaganda about how great they say\r\nthat would be for the local economy, with very little\r\nabout the immense destruction, environmental hazards,\r\nand invasions of private property that would ensue.\r\nThe AJC version of that Dan Chapman story didn’t seem to have\r\n\r\n this\r\nsouth Georgia fracking information in this Athens version that came out a few days later.\r\n

\r\n

\r\nEnvironmental groups, including the Southern Environmental Law\r\nCenter (SELC), were unaware of the renewed interest in northwest\r\nGeorgia’s natural gas field. The SELC is challenging new fracking\r\nrules in Tennessee and proposals to drill on public land in Alabama.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

\r\nAnd nothing about SELC being aware at all of any potential fracking\r\nin south Georgia.\r\n

\r\nIndustry has contemplated the Mesozoic basins of the East Coast\r\nsince the 1980s. The USGS report was released in June coming while\r\nlawmakers in North Carolina and elsewhere considered regulations for\r\nhydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

\r\nYep, that map shows a South Georgia Basin covering much of south Georgia,\r\nincluding Augusta, Savannah, Brunswick, and apparently aas far inland as Macon,\r\nthen across almost to the Alabama line.\r\n

\r\nPlus a North Florida Basin covering more of south Georgia\r\n(including it looks like Dougherty, Colquitt,\r\nBrooks, Lowndes, Lanier, Atkinson, and Ware Counties)\r\nand a big chunk of north Florida.\r\n

\r\nHamilton County, Florida has\r\n\r\njoined the movement to ban fracking in Florida<\/a>\r\neven though it’s not in these basins.\r\nMaybe Georgia counties and cities should start a movement to ban fracking\r\nin Georgia.\r\n
