The U.S. Department of Justice is in the midst of its 60\nday-review of the maps. Voter advocate groups say this may be the last\nchance to comment before the maps go into effect for a decade.\n<p>\n&#8230;\n<p>\nElizabeth Poythress, president of the League of Women Voters of Georgia,\nsays the Justice Department is eager to receive citizen comment.\n<p>\n&ldquo;We&#8217;re just encouraging people to take the advantage they have\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<!--more-->\n<blockquote>\nas citizens to have their voices heard, and if the maps don&#8217;t look as\nthey think they should look, they should make that comment,&ldquo;\nshe said. &rdquo;If they agree with them, they should make that\ncomment.&rdquo;\n<p>\nPoythress says this round of redistricting was different for several\nreasons.\n<p>\n&ldquo;This is the first redistricting process that we&#8217;ve gone through\nthat hasn&#8217;t been done by the Carl Vinson Institute, which was independent\nof politics,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;And I think that&#8217;s another reason citizens\nreally need to look at the maps and see if they really go with what they\nthink their communities look like.&rdquo;\n<\/blockquote>\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/09\/jack-kingston-has-a-green-tongue-gretchen-quarterman.html\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\"   src=\"http:\/\/farm7.static.flickr.com\/6204\/6080737606_f187b45288_o.png\"><\/a>\nThe current maps include\na green tongue extending just far enough into Lowndes County\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/09\/jack-kingston-has-a-green-tongue-gretchen-quarterman.html\">\nso Jack Kingston can lap up Moody AFB.<\/a>\n<p>\nSo what can you do?\n<blockquote>\nGeorgians can comment on the maps by calling the Justice Department at\n1-800-253-3931 or by sending an email to vot1973c@usdoj.gov and writing\n\u201cGeorgia Redistricting\u201d in the subject field.\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\n-jsq\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Jeanne Bonner wrote for GPB News 23 November 2011, Redistricting Map Review Underway Georgians have until Dec. 23 to comment on new state and congressional district maps.
