\r\nI’m shocked, shocked, to discover there’s illegal dumping going on in Lowndes County!\r\nCounty staff assured us all two yeas ago that wouldn’t be a problem,\r\nwhile telling us all we had no choice about waste disposal.\r\nYet today at the county’s retreat<\/a> they showed this map of\r\nillegal dumping locations throughout the county.\r\n

\r\n(If the county published\r\n\r\n board packets before meetings,\r\nyou’d be able to see those maps better than these mobile phone snaps from Gretchen.)\r\n

\r\n\r\nUnnamed “representatives from Lowndes County”\r\ntold the VDT<\/a> 30 January 2013 that:\r\n

\r\n

\r\n“Lowndes County Code Enforcement successfully prosecutes cases\r\non a monthly basis in the Magistrate Court for illegal roadside\r\ndumping. In addition, there are many proactive citizens that will\r\ncall in with tag numbers when they see other citizens throw trash\r\nfrom their vehicles.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\n“While this may seem like an option people can get away with,\r\nmore times than not, these cases are prosecuted successfully.\r\nViolators are fined. The amount of the fine is determined case by\r\ncase by the magistrate. In some cases, where dumping can be so\r\nsignificant that the case is handled by state court, those fines can\r\nbe thousands of dollars.”\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

\r\nSo can we see a list of who’s been prosecuted for illegal dumping?\r\n

\r\nAnd why are any county citizens being prosecuted for the county\r\ngovernment’s own mistake of closing the waste collection sites\r\nand allocating an exclusive franchise to a company financed\r\nfrom New York City?\r\n

\r\nAt least now they’re finally looking into fixing their mistake.\r\n
