<\/a>\nIn April 2003, Governor Sonny Perdue officially designated the Southern\nGeorgia Regional Commission (SGRC) as the Metropolitan Planning\nOrganization (MPO) for the Valdosta Urbanized Area. As the MPO,\nthe SGRC is responsible for carrying out transportation planning\nin the Metropolitan Planning Area using funding received from the\nUS Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration and\nFederal Transit Administration, administered by the Georgia Department\nof Transportation. The MPO works with these and other transportation\nplanning partners to fulfill the requirements of various federal, state\nand local transportation planning laws and plans.\n<\/blockquote>\nAnd it’s not quite the same subject area.\nGLPC mostly hears rezoning cases, although it also deals with larger planning\nissues such as the\n\nComprehensive Plan<\/a>, which includes transportation.\nVLMPO is focused on transportation, but gets into all sorts of related issues:\n\n\n\nThe MPO is responsible for developing a continuing, comprehensive, and\ncooperative transportation planning process that includes long range\nplanning, short range improvement programs, public involvement programs,\nand an annual program of work activities. In addition to these four\nmain documents and plans, the Valdosta-Lowndes MPO works in a broad\nrange of planning areas to ensure a comprehensive transportation planning\nfoundation for the community. These topic areas include: socioeconomic\nanalysis, travel demand modeling, freight movement planning, intelligent\ntransportation systems, maintenance and operations, safety and security\nplanning, transit planning, bike and pedestrian planning, environmental\nmitigation, context sensitive solutions, access management, land use\nplanning and others.\n<\/blockquote>\nFor example, GLPC doesn’t appear to deal with T-SPLOST at all,\nwhile VLMPO \nhas on\n\nits January agenda:<\/a>\n
