\r\n\r\n\"300x208<\/a>\r\nYet another reason Atlanta doesn’t understand south Georgia:\r\nmilitary enlistment is 1 in 100 people in south Georgia from\r\nColumbus to Valdosta, and less than a third of that in the Atlanta Metro area.\r\nEnlistment is probably related to two other major features\r\nof south Georgia that Atlanta doesn’t understand:\r\nit’s agricultural (traditionally a bastion of military supporters),\r\nand it’s poor (and enlisting is one way to a career).\r\nA certain pipeline company may not have taken this factor\r\ninto account, either.\r\n\r\n\r\n

\r\nSome of this can be explained by Fort Benning at Columbus,\r\nthe Marine Logistics Center in Albany, and Moody Air Force Base\r\nnear Valdosta.\r\nYet the Savannah area has Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield,\r\nand doesn’t show as high enlistment rates.\r\nEven Atlanta has Fort Gillem, Fort McPherson, and Atlanta Naval Air Station,\r\nso the presence of military bases isn’t enough alone to explain enlistment.\r\nLowndes County also has many military retirees, and that’s at least\r\na reinforcing factor.\r\n

\r\nWhatever the reason, military enlistments are yet another difference\r\nbetween south Georgia and metro Atlanta.\r\n

\r\nAnd Sabal Trail in its general lack of due diligence for its proposed\r\nfracked methane pipeline maybe not only didn’t know about the Floridan\r\nAquifer and its fragile karst limestone containment, nor about our\r\nacidic soil and rivers that would corrode its pipes even faster\r\nthan they do everywhere else; maybe it didn’t notice its proposed\r\npipeline path goes right through through the most enlisting area\r\nof Georgia.\r\nIn other words, through the area most used to repelling foreign invaders.\r\n
