Quarterman, 30 December 2014\" src=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/7bb6fac330a642c807def6093b0bb546.jpg\"><\/a><br \/>\n<br \/>\nMilitary Enlistments, in<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/features\/archive\/2014\/12\/the-tragedy-of-the-american-military\/383516\/\"><br \/>\nThe Tragedy of the American Military<\/a>,<br \/>\nby James Fallows, The Atlantic, Jan-Feb 2015.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nSome of this can be explained by Fort Benning at Columbus,<br \/>\nthe Marine Logistics Center in Albany, and Moody Air Force Base<br \/>\nnear Valdosta.<br \/>\nYet the Savannah area has Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield,<br \/>\nand doesn&#8217;t show as high enlistment rates.<br \/>\nEven Atlanta has Fort Gillem, Fort McPherson, and Atlanta Naval Air Station,<br \/>\nso the presence of military bases isn&#8217;t enough alone to explain enlistment.<br \/>\nLowndes County also has many military retirees, and that&#8217;s at least<br \/>\na reinforcing factor.<\/p>\n<p>\nWhatever the reason, military enlistments are yet another difference<br \/>\nbetween south Georgia and metro Atlanta.<\/p>\n<p>\nAnd Sabal Trail in its general lack of due diligence for its proposed<br \/>\nfracked methane pipeline maybe not only didn&#8217;t know about the Floridan<br \/>\nAquifer and its fragile karst limestone containment, nor about our<br \/>\nacidic soil and rivers that would corrode its pipes even faster<br \/>\nthan they do everywhere else; maybe it didn&#8217;t notice its proposed<br \/>\npipeline path goes right through through the most enlisting area<br \/>\nof Georgia.<br \/>\nIn other words, through the area most used to repelling foreign invaders.<\/p>\n<p>\n -jsq<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Yet another reason Atlanta doesn&#8217;t understand south Georgia: military enlistment is 1 in 100 people in south Georgia from Columbus to Valdosta, and less than a third of that in the Atlanta Metro area.
