{"id":1189,"date":"2012-01-06T08:00:00","date_gmt":"2012-01-06T13:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2012\/01\/map-of-prisons-in-georgia.html"},"modified":"2012-01-06T08:00:00","modified_gmt":"2012-01-06T13:00:00","slug":"map-of-prisons-in-georgia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2012\/01\/map-of-prisons-in-georgia.html","title":{"rendered":"Map of prisons in Georgia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Georgia Department of Corrections (GDOC) does not provide<br \/>\na map of prisons in Georgia; at least not that I&#8217;ve been able to find.<br \/>\nCCA does not provide a map of its private prisons, either.<br \/>\nThis omission seems odd for an industry that brags about how good it is<br \/>\neconomically.<\/p>\n<p>\nBut someone has composed<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/maps.yourgmap.com\/v\/t\/xj\/Georgia_Prisons_Map.html\"><br \/>\nthis google map<\/a><br \/>\nthat gives the big picture.<br \/>\nI don&#8217;t know if this map is current or accurate, but the spot checks<br \/>\nI&#8217;ve made show markers for real prisons.<br \/>\nDid you know there were so many?<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">\n<a href=\"http:\/\/maps.yourgmap.com\/v\/t\/xj\/Georgia_Prisons_Map.html\"><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\"   src=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7007\/6644249737_e8ef35cd72_o.png\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\nApparently,<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\nthe reddish circles are county prisons;<\/p>\n<li>\nthe red arrows are state prisons for men like Valdosta State Prison;<\/p>\n<li>\nthe yellow arrows are state prisons for women<br \/>\n(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dcor.state.ga.us\/GDC\/FacilityMap\/html\/washington_sp.html\">Pulaski<\/a>)<br \/>\nor juveniles<br \/>\n(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dcor.state.ga.us\/GDC\/FacilityMap\/html\/arrendale_state_prison.html\">Arrendale<\/a>),<br \/>\nexcept Washington State Prison<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dcor.state.ga.us\/GDC\/FacilityMap\/html\/washington_sp.html\"><br \/>\nappears to be back to housing men<\/a>;<\/p>\n<li>\nthe blue arrows are Regional Youth Detention Centers (RYDC);<\/p>\n<li>\nand the green arrows are at least some of CCA&#8217;s private prisons,\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.change.org\/petitions\/valdosta-lowndes-county-industrial-aut\nhority-stop-the-cca-private-prison-aka-project-excel\"><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\"  width=\"118\" height=\"118\"  src=\"http:\/\/change-product\nion.s3.amazonaws.com\/photos\/8\/oe\/vb\/YwOevBBwDsdQUBT-236x236-cropped.jpg\"><\/a><br \/>\nPrisons are <a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/01\/rural-prisons-economic-bane-or-bust.html\"><br \/>\nbad economics<\/a>, producing no longterm improvement in employment, and risking closure, leaving communities with expensive white elephants.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.change.org\/petitions\/valdosta-lowndes-county-industrial-aut\nhority-stop-the-cca-private-prison-aka-project-excel\"><br \/>\nWe don&#8217;t need a private prison in Lowndes County, Georgia.<\/a><br \/>\nSpend those tax dollars on rehabilitation and education instead.<br \/>\nFollow<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.change.org\/petitions\/valdosta-lowndes-county-industrial-aut\nhority-stop-the-cca-private-prison-aka-project-excel\"><br \/>\nthis link<\/a><br \/>\nto petition the Valdosta-Lowndes County Industrial Authority.<\/p>\n<p>\n-jsq<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Georgia Department of Corrections (GDOC) does not provide a map of prisons in Georgia; at least not that I&#8217;ve been able to find.
