{"id":1177,"date":"2012-01-13T09:00:00","date_gmt":"2012-01-13T14:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2012\/01\/southern-company-has-3-biggest-co2-plants-in-us.html"},"modified":"2012-01-13T09:00:00","modified_gmt":"2012-01-13T14:00:00","slug":"southern-company-has-3-biggest-co2-plants-in-us","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2012\/01\/southern-company-has-3-biggest-co2-plants-in-us.html","title":{"rendered":"Southern Company has 3 biggest CO2 plants in U.S."},"content":{"rendered":"David Ibala wrote for the AJC 11 January 2012,\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ajc.com\/news\/study-southern-company-plants-1299806.html\">\nStudy: Southern Company plants are 3 biggest greenhouse gas emitters<\/a>\n<blockquote>\nTwo Southern Company coal-fired electric generating plants near\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ajc.com\/news\/study-southern-company-plants-1299806.html\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\"   src=\"http:\/\/www.ajc.com\/multimedia\/dynamic\/01251\/Scherer_Constructi_1251419l.jpg\"><\/a>\nAtlanta are the biggest contributors to global greenhouse gases in\nthe United States, and a third Southern plant in Alabama is the\nthird-biggest emitter, an analysis of environmental data found\nWednesday.\n<p>\nThe nation&#8217;s No. 1 producer of carbon dioxide &mdash; the\nheat-trapping gas that is held chiefly responsible in models of\nglobal warming &mdash; is Plant Scherer in Juliette, about 65 miles\nsoutheast of downtown Atlanta, according to the Associated Press\nanalysis of data reported to the U.S. Environmental Protection\nAgency for 2010.\n<\/blockquote>\nThat&#8217;s the plant that supplies most of our power in south Georgia,\nwhether you get it through Georgia Power or Colquitt EMC.\n<blockquote>\nThe No. 2 producer is Plant Bowen, just west of Cartersville, about\n50 miles northwest of central Atlanta, and the third-largest is\nPlant Miller in Quinton, Ala., about 165 miles west of Atlanta near\nBirmingham, the AP said.\n<\/blockquote>\nThe story also notes (as a picture caption):\n<blockquote>\nGeorgia Power recently installed pollution-control equipment, called\nbaghouses, to curb mercury pollution at Plant Scherer.
