Advanced Disposal &mdash;Steve Edwards (<strong>work session<\/strong>)\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Xc9BV_vkSBQ&#038;list=PLshUv86fYkiFjsj77LInwI18lyjRAKtsG&#038;index=1\">Video.<\/a>\r\nADS wants to amend the exclusive franchise\r\nfor solid waste collection due to &#8220;lost revenue and unanticipated costs&#8221;.\r\nAnd their number one reason: competition with &#8220;another hauler&#8221;,\r\nin other words<!--more-->\r\n\r\n Deep South Sanitation (DSS), the very company\r\nADS and the Lowndes County Commission have\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2014\/09\/ga-supreme-court-rules-against-deep-south-sanitation-dss-vows-to-keep-going.html\">\r\nsued all the way to the Georgia Supreme Court<\/a>.\r\nNevermind DSS already had a business license for trash collection\r\nbefore ADS and the Commission made that\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/06\/exclusive-franchise-for-solid-waste-collection-services-lcc-2012-12-11.html\">exclusive franchise<\/a>.\r\nBut who could have forseen that a pre-existing local company might actually\r\ndefend its right to do business in its home county,\r\ndespite a lawsuit from\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2012\/12\/veolia-bought-by-advanced-disposal-services-of-alabama-owned-by-highstar-capital-of-new-york-city-lcc-2012-12-10.html\">ADS, owned by investors in New York City<\/a>.\r\n<p>\r\nIf the county wanted to be sure everybody eligible paid, they could have\r\nmade a special tax district like\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/06\/vdt-should-dig-deeper-into-county-trash.html\">state law explicitly authorizes<\/a> the County Commission to do.\r\n<p style=\"text-align:center\">\r\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Xc9BV_vkSBQ?list=PLshUv86fYkiFjsj77LInwI18lyjRAKtsG\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\r\n<p>\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/12\/ads-included-household-trash-in-their-recyclded-items-tim-carroll.html\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;width:150px\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_Jkecxejidos\/THs3H1gkB5I\/AAAAAAAACks\/ymN5sDrINnE\/s400\/diaper-day144-aug29.jpg\"><\/a>\r\nAnd ADS has had their trash rejected for excess contamination.\r\nADS spokesperson Steve Edwards claimed that was due to new regulations.\r\nBut what about the old regulations ADS wasn&#8217;t following?\r\nHe didn&#8217;t mention the City of Valdosta already refused to accept\r\nADS recycling because\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/12\/ads-included-household-trash-in-their-recyclded-items-tim-carroll.html\">\r\nADS included household trash such as used diapers<\/a>.\r\n<p>\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/govt\/loco\/waste\/2012-12-11--ads-contract\/20130609_143604.html\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/govt\/loco\/waste\/2012-12-11--ads-contract\/small\/20130609_143604.jpg\"><\/a>\r\nThe\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/govt\/loco\/waste\/2012-12-11--ads-contract\/20130609_143604.html\">\r\n$12.80 price in the exclusive franchise<\/a>\r\nis not enough anymore, said ADS.\r\nWho could have forseen that?\r\nMaybe anybody who looked at the\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/govt\/loco\/waste\/index.php\">\r\n9 October 2012 summary table of bids<\/a>\r\nwhich\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/06\/how-much-will-trash-collection-rates-go-up-in-lowndes-county-lcc-2012-10-09.html\">\r\nincluded a bid for $18.39<\/a> from\r\n<blockquote style=\"font-size:100%\">\r\nAdvanced Disposal Services Inc\r\n<br>\r\nContact &mdash; Steve Edwards\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/06\/county-picked-the-highest-bid-from-veolia-for-trash-pickup-lcc-2012-10-09.html\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;width:150px;border:none\" src=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/govt\/loco\/waste\/solid-waste-table.jpg\"><\/a>\r\nWould that be the same Steve Edwards who just asked for a rate hike\r\nMonday morning?\r\nThe same Steve Edwards who last year\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/04\/videos-of-the-landfill-gas-energy-meeting-2013-04-15.html#ADS\">couldn&#8217;t forsee any further ADS acquisitions<\/a>\r\nsix weeks before\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/06\/ads-buys-at-your-disposal.html\">\r\nADS bought another company<\/a>, and then <a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/07\/ads-buys-three-more-waste-companies-one-in-valdosta.html\">two more<\/a>.\r\n<p>\r\nMaybe Steve Edwards couldn&#8217;t have forseen a rate hike,\r\nbut anybody who saw\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2011\/08\/lowndes-county-isnt-the-only-one-with-a-trash-problem.html\">\r\nADS&#8217; deal with Wakulla County, Florida<\/a> for $196\/year ($16.33\/month)\r\ncould have.\r\n<p>\r\nMonday morning, Commissioner Demarcus Marshall suggested they address customer service first.\r\nMaybe including\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2014\/04\/videos-garbage-falling-off-trucks-lcc-2014-03-25.html#Garbage-falling-off-trucks\">garbage falling off trucks<\/a>\r\nas one citizen told the Commission 25 March 2014 or\r\nthat\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2014\/09\/videos-gp-investments-hahira-pipeline-alapaha-water-trail-lcc-2014-09-09.html#Odors-from-Evergeen-Landfill-and-ADS\">\r\n&#8220;horrible wretched smell&#8221;<\/a> that another citizen noted 9 September 2014.\r\nI would continue linking to citizens speaking against that exclusive\r\nfranchise and its ill effects, but\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/06\/videos-mostly-trash-plus-3-appointments-1-rezoning-2-wastewater-lcc-2013-06-11.html\">there have been so many of them<\/a>.\r\n<p>\r\nChairman Bill Slaughter said Monday morning that\r\nthis was an opportunity to &#8220;relook\r\nat the solid waste plan&#8221;.\r\nHe noted there would be a new Commission with two new members.\r\nWe remember that the Commissioner who moved to adopt <a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2012\/12\/videos-lcc-2012-12-11.html#Waste\">the solid waste\r\nordinance<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2012\/12\/videos-lcc-2012-12-11.html#ADS\">the exclusive franchise<\/a>, Richard Raines,\r\nwill no longer be on the Commission, nor another who voted for it,\r\nCrawford Powell.\r\n<p>\r\nMaybe they could even hold\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/06\/state-law-requires-public-hearing-before-trash-decision.html\">\r\nthe public hearing state law requires<\/a>\r\nthat they didn&#8217;t previously hold!\r\n<p>\r\nWe shall see what the new Commissioners are willing to do.\r\nBill Slaughter was not Chairman and was not even on the Commission\r\nwhen this bad deal was made.\r\nHe now has an opportunity to preside over fixing it, or even\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/02\/videos-tabled-hotchkiss-landing-road-closing-but-trash-co-apology-lcc-2013-02-12.html#jsq\">\r\nexercise the termination clause<\/a>.\r\n<p>\r\nCommissioner Demarcus Marshall\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lowndesdems.org\/2014\/11\/30\/town-hall-meeting-by-demarcus-marshall-lowndes-county-commissioner-super-district-4\/\">\r\nis holding a Town Hall<\/a>\r\n6PM 15 December 2014 at the Lowndes County Civic Center,\r\n2102 E Hill Avenue,\r\nValdosta, GA 31601.\r\nThat might be a good place to voice your ideas on trash collection.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n -jsq\r\n<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Who could have forseen the rate hike ADS requested Monday morning at the Lowndes County Commission Work Session?
