Cobb EMC was the largest participant in the\nconsortium\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.power4georgians.com\/\">\nPower4Georgians.<\/a>\n<p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/atlanta\/news\/2012\/01\/25\/georgia-coal-plant-project-to-push-on.html\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\"   src=\"http:\/\/assets.bizjournals.com\/philadelphia\/print-edition\/lump-of-coal*280.jpg?v=1\"><\/a>\nThe consortium began looking for other partners to replace Cobb EMC\nwell before Wednesday&#8217;s decision, which had been anticipated, said\nDean Alford, spokesman for Power4Georgians.\n<p>\n&ldquo;This in no way changes the course,&rdquo; he said.\n&ldquo;It&#8217;s still full steam ahead.&rdquo;\n<\/blockquote>\nBut he wouldn&#8217;t say who else would help fund it.\nWe&#8217;ll see whether he&#8217;s blustering or actually has any further backers.\n<p>\nJohn Roach and Kim Isaza in MJDOnline yesterday,\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mdjonline.com\/view\/full_story\/17281644\/article-EMC-backs-out-of-plan-to-build-coal-fired-plant?instance=home_news_bullets\">\nEMC backs out of plan to build coal-fired plant<\/a>,\nhad a list of the other current partners:\n\n<!--more-->\n<blockquote>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ssemc.com\/\">\nSnapping Shoals<\/a>,\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cgemc.com\/\">\nCentral Georgia<\/a> and\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonemc.com\/\">\nWashington EMCs<\/a> are the other\npartners in Power 4 Georgians consortium which had also proposed to\nbuild a second large coal-fired plant in south Georgia to be called\nPlant Ben Hill.\n<\/blockquote>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.macon.com\/2012\/01\/26\/1879719\/plant-washington-loses-biggest.html\">\nS. Heather Duncan in the Macon Telegraph today<\/a>\nnamed a fourth backer and had some reaction from several of the backers:\n<blockquote>\nUpson EMC had a board meeting Wednesday, at which Cobb EMC&#8217;s\ndecision was discussed, said Neil Trice, CEO of Upson EMC.\n<p>\n&ldquo;We&#8217;re committed to continue,&rdquo; he said.\n<p>\nHe and Christy Chewning, manager of marketing at Central Georgia\nEMC, said Wednesday that their cooperatives had not been asked to\ncontribute any additional funding now that Cobb EMC has pulled out.\n<p>\n&ldquo;We regret Cobb EMC&#8217;s decision,&rdquo; Chewning said.\n&ldquo;At this moment, we are full speed ahead on (the\nproject).&rdquo; Central Georgia EMC has about 50,000 meters in 14\ncounties, including Bibb, Jones, Monroe, Putnam, Lamar, Jasper and\nButts.\n<p>\nWashington EMC officials did not return calls Wednesday.\n<p>\nSnapping Shoals EMC is still committed to the Plant Washington\nproject, said Leigh-Anne Burgess, EMC communications specialist.\n&#8220;The effects of Cobb EMC&#8217;s decision to exit the project are\ncurrently unclear,&#8221; she said in an email. &#8220;We will be exploring all\nour options over the next few months.&#8221;\n<\/blockquote>\nSo somebody&#8217;s got to come up with the 40% backing Cobb EMC was putting in.\nSOunds like whistling through the coal dust to me.\n<p>\nSpeaking of that second plant with the same backers, the ABC article remarked:\n<blockquote>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/124469840901543\/?ref=ts\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\"   src=\"http:\/\/profile.ak.fbcdn.net\/hprofile-ak-snc4\/41574_124469840901543_9457_n.jpg\"><\/a>\nThe Cobb EMC board also voted to end the utility&#8217;s participation in\na second power plant proposed by Power4Georgians. The Ben Hill\nCounty, Ga., project is not as far along in planning as Plant Washington.\n<\/blockquote>\nLess than half as far as Washington County,\nBen Hill County is only about 60 miles from here as the smoke blows.\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/124469840901543\/?ref=ts\">\nNo coal plant in Ben Hill County!<\/a>\n<p>\n-jsq\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Somebody&#8217;s been watching too much Twilight.
