\r\nNot everyone at the\r\n\r\nOpen Government Symposium on Friday<\/a> were\r\naffiliated with a government.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\n\r\n<\/a>\r\nSome of them, like John and Gretchen Quarterman, serve as watchdogs\r\nfor the government. These watchdogs attend the open, public meetings\r\nheld by governing bodies, acquire the documents and records of these\r\nmeetings and other governmental affairs, and serve to make sure our\r\nlocal governments behave like they should.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nThe Quartermans run the Lowndes Area Knowledge Exchange (LAKE), a\r\nrepository of information about the governments of\r\n\r\nValdosta<\/a> and\r\n\r\nLowndes County<\/a>, video footage of meetings, as well as a number of\r\nother topics that pertain to the area, such as the\r\n\r\nSabal Trail Pipeline<\/a>.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nThey attended the Friday symposium, as well as\r\n\r\nthe one held last month at Macon<\/a>,\r\nrecording both events for their LAKE site.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

\r\nVideos of both the Macon and Valdosta Symposia are forthcoming.\r\nAnd I guess Carolyn escaped mention by being at work and thus\r\nunable to attend the symposium.\r\n

\r\nI’m happy to participate in the VDT’s attempt to lead\r\nthe Lowndes County government with honey to transparency.\r\nIt’s hardly the first time that’s been tried, but hey,\r\nthe VDT has a new broom.\r\n\r\n

\r\nAnd LAKE has a little list including\r\n\r\nthe items from the earlier posting about the symposium<\/a>.\r\n

\r\nSo far, we don’t see much change after Friday’s Symposium.\r\nFor example, we still had to get tonight’s Planning Commission\r\nagenda from the city of Valdosta\r\n\r\nand publish it on the LAKE blog<\/a>,\r\nbecause the Lowndes County Commission still doesn’t.\r\n

\r\nThe County Clerk announced a date for the new county website to be up.\r\nI believe it was December 14th; you’ll see when we post the videos\r\nof the symposium.\r\nMaybe that new website will publish agendas, minutes, and board packets\r\nfor the Planning Commission, the County Commission, maybe even VLDA.\r\nWe shall see.\r\n
