Kewaunee, Calvert Cliffs, and now Crystal River\npermanently closing say it&#8217;s time for Georgia to stop wasting money\non Southern Company&#8217;s already over-budget and increasingly-late\nnukes and get on with solar power and wind off the coast: for\njobs, for energy independence, and for clean air and plenty of\nclean water.\n<\/p>\n<dl>\n<dt>\nFebruary 2013:\n<\/dt>\n<dd>\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2013\/02\/duke-energy-is-closing-crystal-river-nuclear-reactor.html\">\nDuke Energy is closing<\/a> the Crystal River nuclear\nreactor\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tampabay.com\/news\/business\/energy\/duke-energy-announces-closing-of-crystal-river-nuclear-power-plant\/1273794\">\n(Tampa Bay Times, 6 Feb 2013)<\/a>,\n160 miles south of us, because\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2013\/01\/crystal-river-nuke-still-cant-get-insurance-payoff.html\">\nnobody wants to pay to fix it<\/a>:\nbetween &#8220;$1.5 billion and $3.4 billion,\nplus what it costs to buy power to replace\nwhat Crystal River would have produced while it is\nbeing repaired&#8221;\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/07\/torresol-energy-provides-solar-energy-night-and-day.html\">\n[Charlotte Business Journal, 11 Jan 2013]<\/a>.\n<\/dd>\n<dt>\nNovember 2012:<\/dt>\n<dd>\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/11\/calvert-cliffs-nuke-terminated.html\">\nNRC terminated<\/a> Maryland&#8217;s Calvert Cliffs 3\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nirs.org\/nukerelapse\/calvert\/11-01-12terminationorder.pdf\">\n(NRC 1 Nov 2012)<\/a>\nafter\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/09\/nrc-rejects-nuke-permit-for-edf-in-maryland.html\">\nConstellation Energy dropped out<\/a> because the cost &#8220;is too high\nand creates too much risk for Constellation&#8221;\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/2010-10-09\/constellation-drops-maryland-nuclear-plant-loan-denting-edf-s-u-s-plans.html\">\n[Bloomberg 10 Oct 2010]<\/a>.\n<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<!--more-->\n<blockquote>\n<dl>\n<dt>\nOctober 2012:<\/dt>\n<dd>\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/12\/kewaunee-nuke-is-shutting-down-why-are-we-building-more-at-vogtle.html\">\nDominion Power decided to close<\/a>\nWisconsin&#8217;s\nKewaunee reactor\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dom.com\/about\/stations\/nuclear\/kewaunee\/index.jsp\">\n(Dominion Power PR 22 Oct 2012)<\/a>\nas not economically viable with no buyer\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jsonline.com\/news\/opinion\/market-has-spoken-in-kewaunee-shutdown-1b7bcjh-176502791.html\">\n(JSOnline 30 Oct 2012)<\/a>.\n<\/dd>\n<dt>\nJanuary 2012:<\/dt>\n<dd>leaks shut down California&#8217;s\n<table style=\"float:right;width:30%;\"  >\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"font-size: 120%; Quarterman Lowndes County<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\nSince then\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2013\/02\/hb-267-financing-costs-construction-of-nuclear-generating-plant.html\">\nHB 267<\/a> to stop Georgia Power from charging customers for Plant Vogtle\ncost overruns\nhas been proposed in the Georgia General Assembly,\nand it turns out reactors closing for financial reasons goes back to\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2013\/02\/it-has-to-close-because-of-the-pocketbook-kyle-jones-on-maine-yankee-nuclear-power-plant.html\">\nMaine Yankee in 1997 and even before.<\/a>\nThat (plus Kewaunee and Crystal River)\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2013\/02\/as-went-maine-yankee-so-goes-san-onofre-another-reactor-will-close.html\">\nbodes well for<\/a>\nSan Onofre 2 staying closed permanently,\nalthough\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2013\/02\/vermont-yankee-may-be-next-nuke-to-close.html\">Maine Yankee may close first,<\/a>\nand\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2013\/02\/pilgrim-nuke-shut-down-in-winter-storm-again-this-weekend.html\">\nEntergy can&#8217;t keep Pilgrim Station up in a snowstorm<\/a>,\nnot to mention Entergy can&#8217;t keep the lights on during the SuperBowl.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nHow about we stop shovelling money into nukes and spend it on dependable\nsolar and wind power instead?\n<\/p>\n<p>\n-jsq\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"My op-ed in the VDT today; I&#8217;ve added links, plus some more after the op-ed.
