\r\n\r\n<\/a>\r\nVALDOSTA — The Georgia Water Coalition has named the proposed\r\nSabal Trail pipeline as one of its Dirty Dozen for 2014, which\r\nhighlights “12 of the worst offenses to Georgia’s\r\nwaters,” according to the organization.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\n\r\n<\/a>\r\nThe pipeline is proposed to run under the Withlacoochee river, near\r\nValdosta.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

\r\n\r\nIn a\r\n\r\npress release<\/a>,\r\n the GWC cited the risk of contaminating\r\nsouthwest Georgia’s well water, rivers and streams, as well\r\n\r\n\r\n<\/a>\r\n as noise\r\nand air pollution from a proposed compressor station situated near\r\nAlbany.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nThe GWC also cited the possible dangers of the pipeline, citing two\r\nexplosions in particular — a 2011 explosion in Alabama that\r\ntorched 65 acres of forest, and a 1994 explosion on a Spectra Energy\r\npipeline that ruined an apartment complex, leaving hundreds\r\nhomeless.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

\r\n\r\nThe story cited the dangers of sinkholes in karst limestone\r\nsuch as encloses our Floridan Aquifer drinking water, and quoted\r\nthe GWC press release:\r\n

\r\n<\/a>\r\n“Sinkholes are increasingly common in the region and may cause\r\npipeline leaks that could easily contaminate the underground\r\naquifers that serve as the drinking water source for many rural\r\nresidents”\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n
