Last week Sheriff Chris Prine volunteered his opinion of private prisons:

\n<\/a><\/p>\n

\nYou were talking about the private jail system.
\nI’d like to voice my opinion of that.
\nThe private jail from our study so far, the cost….
\nI’m going to use a figure of around 800 inmates;
\nwe’re pretty close to 900 in our jail now.
\nWe figure around maybe $36 a day to feed the inmate,
\ncounting of course the food and our employment.<\/p>\n

\nAnd looking at the private jail sector.
\nAnd of course I’m responsible for the inmate whether he is in a private
\njail or in my jail.
\nIf I’m going to be responsible for that inmate, I want him here;
\nI want him in my jail, not a private jail.
\n

\nAnother thing is the cost factor.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/p>\n

\nLike I said, we’re figuring around $36 per day.
\nIn the private sector they’re figuring around $64 a day….<\/p>\n

\nWe tried the private probation office.
\nIf somebody in the private probation office,
\nif we have an inmate or a violation of probation,
\nit doesn’t take but two or three dollars for them
\nto violate the probation and put them back in jail.
\nWhere we can approach the state a little bit better.<\/p>\n
