\n\n<\/a>\nGov. Rick Scott said Thursday he will explore opportunities to\nprivatize state prisons on his own following the Senate’s defeat of\na bill that would have required some prisons be bid out to private\ncompanies.\n

\nSpeaking to reporters Thursday morning after a public event on\ninsurance fraud, Scott acknowledged that initially he didn’t\nconsider privatizing prisons a priority, but was disappointed the\nSenate voted down a bill that would have done that, and said he’ll\nexplore what many backers of the Senate plan said was a possibility\nthat the governor could order privatization unilaterally.\n<\/blockquote>\n

\nThe irony:\n

\nScott pointed out that there are fewer inmates than anticipated and that\nit didn’t make sense to spend state dollars on half-full prisons.\n<\/blockquote>\nMaybe nobody told Gov. Scott CCA wants\nguaranteed 90% occupancy.<\/a>\n

\nMore irony:\n\n\n

\n“Why wouldn’t we save that money and put the money into\neducation, into textbooks, and to make sure we have the right health\ncare safety net instead of spending the money where we don’t need\nto?“\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<\/a>\nThat from the governor who insisted on drug-testing welfare recipients,\nto the tune of $178 million, finding 2% positive, saving Florida $60,000,\nfor a net loss to the state of $178 million.\nFloridians should trust this man about saving money?\n

\nAnd Georgians should trust anybody who claims private prisons save money\nafter the mounds of evidence that they do not?\nHow about if we just stop building prisons and stop locking so many people up\nso we can spend those tax doollars on rehabilitation, health care, and education?\nHere’s a petition<\/a>\nto stop the private prison in Lowndes County, Georgia.\n
