Mark Dayton"},"content":{"rendered":"Remember\n<a href=\"http:\/\/alecexposed.org\/wiki\/ALEC_Exposed\">\nAmerican Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC)<\/a>,\nthe\n<a href=\"http:\/\/alecwatch.org\/report.html\">\nbig corporate lobby group<\/a> that\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2010\/12\/cca-private-prisons-and-az-immigration-law.html\">\nhelps CCA push for private prisons?<\/a>\nThe one that\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/07\/alec-crafts-state-laws-including-for-private-prisons-and-big-oil.html\">\nlobbied 24 states<\/a>\nto pass &#8220;anti-immigration&#8221; laws that create new misdemeanors and felonies\nto send more customers to CCA prisons?\nOne governor has decided he&#8217;s had enough of that.\n<p>\nZaid Jilani wrote for Republic Report 15 February 2012,\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.republicreport.org\/2012\/minnesota-governor-calls-out-corporate-front-group-alec-vetoes-its-bills\/\">\nMinnesota Governor Calls Out Corporate Front Group ALEC, Vetoes Its Bills<\/a>\n<blockquote>\nIt has grown so powerful that it now has\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.care2.com\/causes\/meet-alec-the-group-taking-over-your-state-legislatures.html\">\nnearly one-third<\/a>\nof all state legislators under its umbrella.\n<p>\nALEC has worked with legislators to pass bills ranging from issues\nas diverse as stripping unionized workers of their rights to\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.campusprogress.org\/articles\/conservative_corporate_advocacy_group_alec_behind_voter_disenfranchise\/\">\nmaking it harder for low-income citizens to vote.<\/a>\nIt is usually able to do so because it hands its corporate-written\ntemplate bills to state legislators and gets them passed without any\npublic scrutiny as to the origin of this legislation.\n<p>\nLate last week, Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton (D)\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.republicreport.org\/2012\/minnesota-governor-calls-out-corporate-front-group-alec-vetoes-its-bills\/\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\"   src=\"http:\/\/www.republicreport.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/markdayton.jpeg\"><\/a>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theuptake.org\/2012\/02\/11\/mn-governor-vetos-alec-template-bills\/\">\ndecided<\/a> that\ncorporate front groups like ALEC should not be able to write his\nstate&#8217;s laws. Dayton decided to veto a series of &ldquo;tort\nreform&rdquo; bills that would&#8217;ve restricted the rights of citizens\nto sue to hold big corporations responsible.
