\n“The power company ought to be doing this, but they don’t want to\nbuy it from anybody that produces it,” said state Sen. Buddy Carter,\nthe bill’s main sponsor.\n

\nThe state’s main electricity provider, Georgia Power, is opposing\nthe legislation, pointing to the state’s Electric Service Act.\n\n<\/a>\nCreated nearly four decades ago, the law established assigned\nterritories for the power company, along with 42 electric membership\ncooperatives and 52 cities with municipal systems, all competing for\ncustomers.\n

\nSpokeswoman Christy Ihrig said in a statement that the proposed bill\nwould illegally infringe on the company’s territory and that the\nintroduction of a new supplier could drive up rates for customers\nbecause utilities would be required to hike costs. She added the\ncompany is supportive of solar power and is working to provide solar\nas an option to customers.\n<\/blockquote>\nAh, the old territoriality law!\n“Competing” through assigned territories.\nDoes that seem right to you?\n
