\r\nTerri Lupo. South Region Vice President at Georgia Power,\r\nhas provided further information on\r\n\r\nValdosta converting to LED streetlights<\/a>.\r\n

\r\n\r\n<\/a>\r\nShe said on the telephone yesterday that\r\nGeorgia Power met with Valdosta City Manager Larry Hanson last week.\r\nGeorgia Power plans over next four years to change out all the streetlights\r\nin Georgia, from high pressure sodium (or whatever they’re currently using)\r\nto LED lighting.\r\nShe says that will be more efficient, and will provide more \r\nlight, with a better pattern of coverage.\r\nValdosta had already expressed interest, so they were one of the first\r\nto join this LED streetlight program.\r\n

\r\nShe said it’s not surprising\r\n\r\nTim Carroll was a little vague on the details<\/a>,\r\nsince Georgia Power is still working those out for this new program.\r\nThe time frame depends on when the manufacturer can supply the equipment:\r\nprobably some time in the middle of next year (2015), maybe first quarter.\r\nShe said:\r\n

\r\n“I think this is a very positive thing for us to do this.\r\nI think the cities will like it.”\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

\r\nShe added that the light will have a GPS chip that will tell Georgia Power\r\nwhen the light is dimming or is out.\r\n

\r\n“That will have advantages for us and for the customer, also.\r\nBecause now the customer has to call us, and the lights will inform us directly.”\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

\r\nThis Georgia Power press release of 8 October 2014 is also related,\r\n\r\nGeorgia Power hosts “Change a Light, Change the World” pledge drive<\/a>.\r\nThat PR is about end users, but it also indicates Georgia Power is doing\r\nthings to change over old-style lights to more efficient, energy-conserving,\r\nand money-saving versions.\r\nPlus that LED streetlight GPS self-reporting feature.\r\nAnd that PR coincides with the stock price going up of Southern Company,\r\nGeorgia Power’s parent company, so it could even be more evidence that\r\ninvestors care about conservation, efficiency, and renewable energy.\r\n
