\r\nThe Telegraph reports that land has been cleared on a 57-acre tract\r\nnear Georgia Highway 247 to make room for solar panels.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

\r\n\r\n<\/a>\r\nPreviously the 57-acre tract next to Ga. 247 just south of the\r\nMuseum of Aviation was forestland, but those trees have been cut\r\ndown over the past month to make way for the solar array….\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nBut what would probably catch people’s eye the most is a couple of\r\nF-15s that can now be seen on the edge of the cleared area. Even\r\npeople who don’t work on base probably recognize that those planes\r\nare far away from the maintenance area and runway on the north end\r\nof the base.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

\r\nWhile I’d think they could find land that already didn’t have trees on it,\r\neven what they’re doing is still better than\r\ngouging a 600-mile hundred-foot-wide right of way\r\nfor the 36-inch Sabal Trail fracked methane pipeline<\/a>.\r\n

\r\nLeach wasn’t sure when the solar panels might start going up, but it\r\nshould be soon, since the project is expected to be completed in\r\nJanuary.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nThe Air Force announced in July it has signed a 20-year lease deal\r\nwith New Generation Power to build the array, expected to produce 10\r\nmegawatts of electricity that will be sold to Georgia Power, which\r\nprovides the base’s power.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nWhile the power generated will not directly serve the base, it is\r\nestimated to be enough to account for an eighth of the base’s power\r\nconsumption.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nBecause it is produced on base, it will help the base meet mandates\r\nfor alternative energy usage.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

\r\nAnd that’s a lot faster than a pipeline can be installed, too.\r\n
