{"id":10698,"date":"2014-09-25T08:22:37","date_gmt":"2014-09-25T12:22:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/?p=10698"},"modified":"2014-09-25T08:31:38","modified_gmt":"2014-09-25T12:31:38","slug":"solarcity-in-buffalo-1000-megawatts-capacity-3000-jobs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2014\/09\/solarcity-in-buffalo-1000-megawatts-capacity-3000-jobs.html","title":{"rendered":"SolarCity in Buffalo: 1,000 megawatts capacity, 3,000 jobs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\r\nThree times as many millios of dollars invested as expected, 3,000 jobs, and\r\nNew York Governor Andrew Cuomo says &#8220;they could have gone anywhere on the planet&#8221;.\r\nThey could have come here.\r\nThey went to snowy Buffalo.\r\n<p>\r\nDavid Robinson wrote for Buffalo News 23 September 2014,\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.buffalonews.com\/city-region\/riverbend\/historic-day-for-buffalo-zemsky-says-of-solarcity-riverbend-plans-20140923\">\r\n\u2018Historic day for Buffalo,\u2019 Zemsky says of SolarCity RiverBend plans<\/a>,\r\n<blockquote style=\"font-size:100%\">\r\n<p>\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.buffalonews.com\/storyimage\/BN\/20140923\/BUSINESS\/140929532\/EP\/1\/1\/EP-140929532.jpg&#038;maxW=960\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none\" src=\"http:\/\/www.buffalonews.com\/storyimage\/BN\/20140923\/BUSINESS\/140929532\/EP\/1\/1\/EP-140929532.jpg&#038;maxW=300\"><\/a>\r\nSolarCity&#8217;s planned factory in South Buffalo &mdash; and the 3,000\r\njobs that come with it &mdash; packs a powerful economic punch.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nTo be built on the former Republic Steel plant site in South\r\nBuffalo, the factory is expected to bring more new jobs to the\r\nregion than the steel maker ever had in its heyday.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nWith the ability to make enough solar panels to generate more than\r\n1,000 megawatts of electricity, the factory would be<!--more--> the biggest\r\nsolar panel factory in the Western Hemisphere and one of the biggest\r\nin the world. It would be three times bigger than any other solar\r\npanel factory in the United States, and could be in open by early\r\n2016, with full production a year later.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nAnd the announcement that the factory would bring 3,000 jobs to the\r\nregion is the single-biggest employment announcement in the Buffalo\r\nNiagara region in decades, topping the 2,500 new jobs that GEICO\r\npromised to bring to its Amherst customer service center.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nAnd the state&#8217;s investment of $750 million is more than three times\r\nlarger than the $225 million originally planned.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n&ldquo;It&#8217;s a historic day for Buffalo,&rdquo; said Howard Zemsky,\r\nthe co-chairman of the Western New York Regional Development\r\nCouncil. &ldquo;It&#8217;s about next-generation industries. It&#8217;s about\r\nnext-generation jobs.&rdquo;\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nAnd it&#8217;s not just jobs at the factory itself:\r\n<blockquote style=\"font-size:100%\">\r\n<p>\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=F2_mYJvfr1s\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none\" src=\"http:\/\/www.buffalonews.com\/storyimage\/BN\/20140923\/BUSINESS\/140929532\/EP\/1\/2\/EP-140929532.jpg&#038;maxW=300\"><\/a>\r\nMore than 1,450 of the jobs will be manufacturing jobs within the\r\nplant. The plant also is expected to lead to the creation of more\r\nthan 1,400 jobs for workers providing support and services for the\r\nfactory, state officials said. SolarCity also is expected to create\r\nmore than 2,000 jobs across the state for workers selling and\r\ninstalling solar energy systems and providing other services.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n&ldquo;This is the biggest accomplishment to date &mdash; and it&#8217;s\r\nbigger than anything we could have imagined,&rdquo; said Gov. Andrew\r\nM. They&#8217;re going to think of the largest production\r\nsite for solar panels in the Western Hemisphere.&rdquo;\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nImagine a Lowndes County Chairman able to say that of the Valdosta MSA.\r\nThose <a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2011\/02\/we-welcome-solar-power-to-the-city-of-valdosta-and-lowndes-county.html\">solar panels at Valdosta&#8217;s Mud Creek WWTP<\/a> are a good start.\r\nTime to keep going and catch up with Buffalo.\r\n<blockquote style=\"font-size:100%\">\r\n<p style=\"text-align:center;font-size:80%\">\r\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/bj2cSTHGFFk\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2014\/03\/100-sun-wind-and-water-can-power-each-u-s-state-and-the-world-stanford-study.html\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;width:300px\" src=\"http:\/\/thesolutionsproject.org\/infographic\/img\/infographics\/solutionsProject-ga.png\"><\/a>\r\nAfter\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2014\/06\/thousands-of-solar-jobs-a-thousand-miles-north-of-here-solarcity-buys-silevo-2.html\">\r\nSilevo was purchased in June by SolarCity<\/a>, it put the\r\ndevelopment of Riverbend into question. But with the state\r\nincreasing its investment, the company says it will invest $5\r\nbillion in the project over the next 10 years. CEO Lyndon Rive says\r\ntheir factory at 1.2 million-square feet will make the most\r\nefficient module in the world, creating an annual solar capacity of\r\nmore than 1 gigawatt when it reaches full production.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\n\r\nImagine a Georgia governor and legislature with that kind of vision,\r\ninstead of\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/spectrabusters.org\/2014\/09\/19\/spectra-energy-and-gas-pipeline-campaign-contributions-to-ga-gov-nathan-deal\/\">\r\ntaking campaign contributions from the Sabal Trail methane bridge to the past<\/a>.\r\nThen Georgia might not be <a href=\"http:\/\/spectrabusters.org\/2014\/09\/19\/spectra-energy-and-gas-pipeline-campaign-contributions-to-ga-gov-nathan-deal\/\">50th of 50 states, with the highest unemployment rate in the nation<\/a>.\r\n<p>\r\nMaybe if we can modify that\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2012\/11\/tv-station-gets-it-territoriality-law-prevents-solar-in-georgia.html\">1973 Territorial Electric Service Act<\/a>\r\nso it stops impeding solar financing, SolarCity and other solar companies\r\nwill at least finance and install solar systems in Georgia.\r\nIf Georgia Power and Southern Company keep standing in the way of that\r\nchange, they will fall down the\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/news\/articles\/SB10001424052702304773104579270362739732266\">\r\n&#8220;death spiral&#8221;<\/a> Wall Street predicts\r\nfor\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2014\/05\/slight-changes-at-southern-company-so-2014-05-28.html\">\r\nutilities that don&#8217;t do enough renewable energy<\/a>,\r\nand the change may come after SolarCity buys them.\r\nBut why should we have to wait years more,\r\nshoveling more ratepayer dollars down that nuclear money pit at Plant Vogtle,\r\nletting\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/spectrabusters.org\/2014\/09\/17\/sabal-trail-response-to-ferc-directive-of-26-august-2014\/\">\r\na company from Houston<\/a>\r\ngouge\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/spectrabusters.org\/lng-export\/#Florida\">\r\na pipeline to LNG exports<\/a> through Georgia,\r\nwhen\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2014\/07\/all-of-the-above-mercury-methane-fracking-radioactive-waste-water-overuse-epa-go-clean-renewables-instead-susan-corbett.html\">\r\nwe could be getting on with faster, cheaper, cleaner solar power\r\nright now<\/a> for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/01\/rural-aids-poverty-the-cause-solar-power-part-of-the-solution.html\">jobs here where we need them<\/a>?\r\n<p>\r\nLook up, Valdosta, Lowndes County, and Georgia!\r\nThe sun is rising on Buffalo.\r\nIt can rise here, too.\r\n<p>\r\n -jsq\r\n<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Three times as many millios of dollars invested as expected, 3,000 jobs, and New York Governor Andrew Cuomo says &#8220;they could have gone anywhere on the planet&#8221;.
