Quarterman for Lowndes Area Knowledge Exchange (LAKE),\r\n<br>\r\nValdosta, Lowndes County, Georgia, 19 August 2014.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wwals.net\/about\/mission\/\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8357\/8357596732_d08a52cb69_n.jpg\"><\/a>\r\nFirst I complimented the Authority on their recent name change\r\n(from Industrial to Development).\r\n<p>\r\n\r\nThen I introduced WWALS Watershed Coalition, Inc., whose mission is:\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nWWALS is an advocacy organization working for watershed conservation\r\nof the Willacoochee, Withlacoochee, Alapaha, and Little River\r\nSystems watershed in south Georgia and north Florida through\r\nawareness, environmental monitoring, and citizen advocacy.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wwals.net\/2014\/07\/22\/wwals-gets-grant-river-network-vdt\/\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8008\/7664100194_87543844c7_m.jpg\"><\/a>\r\nI talked about the &#8220;tiny little grant so small I don&#8217;t want to mention\r\nit after seeing your budget; very tiny&#8221;\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wwals.net\/2014\/07\/22\/wwals-gets-grant-river-network-vdt\/\">\r\nfrom Georgia River Network<\/a> as a Turner Regrant, sourcing funds\r\nfrom the Turner Foundation.\r\nHow it&#8217;s been useful as a sign of recognition, and for paying\r\nfor brochure, maps, website, and maybe some signs to market\r\nan Alapaha River Water Trail.\r\n<p>\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=z_0VY9WZXvc&#038;index=12&#038;list=PLshUv86fYkiEqtcl_vxMrliOUZot776C5\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" src=\"https:\/\/i.ytimg.com\/vi\/z_0VY9WZXvc\/mqdefault.jpg\"><\/a>\r\nI noted the Alapha River gets an A because it has very little development\r\nright next to it, it has rapids, native vegetation and wildlife, etc.\r\n(That&#8217;s actually an A+ from\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=8pPuD5T1wHoC&#038;pg=PA333&#038;source=gbs_toc_r&#038;cad=4#v=onepage&#038;q&#038;f=false\">\r\nCanoeing &#038; Kayaking Georgia,\r\n By Suzanne Welander, Bob Sehlinger, Don Otey<\/a>, page 331.)\r\nI said the Altamaha gets a C.\r\n(Actually a B-; see page 285.)\r\n<p>\r\nI invited them all to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wwals.net\/2014\/08\/31\/pictures-wwals-alapaha-river-outing-jsq-2014-08-24\/\">24 August 2014 WWALS Alapaha Outing<\/a>\r\nat Hotchkiss Crossing from the Lanier County side; see pictures.\r\n<p>\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wwals.net\/?attachment_id=3054\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none\" src=\"http:\/\/www.wwals.net\/wp-content\/themes\/pianoblack\/img\/\/2014\/08\/3f017abc8aa5750dd3306c285d687e51.jpg\"><\/a>\r\nI noted that outing would go past where the county\r\nwas establishing a park at US 84.\r\nI thanked the county once again for doing that (the county Chairman\r\nwas sitting in the audience; he nodded).\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nThis is a quality of life kind of thing.\r\nPeople who want to work for some of the kinds of jobs you&#8217;re trying to attract;\r\nthey&#8217;ll find this kind of thing attractive.\r\n<p>\r\nI won&#8217;t predict that it will bring in hundreds of jobs,\r\nbut it&#8217;s something they will find attractive.\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nI mentioned the Valdosta-Lowndes County Parks &#038; Recreation Authority (VLPRA)\r\nhas been thinking about this general idea for some time, mostly on the\r\nWithlacoochee River,\r\nbut we were starting on the Alapaha partly because of hte park,\r\nand because of it being wild and scenic.\r\n<p>\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wwals.net\/2014\/09\/05\/withlacoochee-and-suwannee-paddle-21-sep-2014\/\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/www.wwals.net\/wp-content\/themes\/pianoblack\/img\/\/2014\/09\/79d9af6492eba4e90e0a8d7fa8aad439.jpg\"><\/a>\r\nAnd I invited them to this Sunday&#8217;s much longer outing, 10 AM 21 September 2014,\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wwals.net\/2014\/09\/05\/withlacoochee-and-suwannee-paddle-21-sep-2014\/\">\r\non the Withlacoochee and Suwannee Rivers<\/a>.\r\nIt should take about five hours on the water.\r\nI noted this was where that Sabal Trail natural gas pipeline\r\nwould cross each of those two rivers.\r\nBut you don&#8217;t need to know anything about the pipeline to enjoy\r\nthe outing.\r\nAnd still, anyone who doesn&#8217;t have a boat, we&#8217;ll see if we can rustle\r\none up for you.\r\n<p>\r\n -jsq\r\n<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"I talked about the Water Trail that WWALS Watershed Coalition, Inc. is developing on the Alapaha River with a tiny grant from the Georgia River Network, and how that was a plus for local economic development that wouldn&#8217;t cost VLCDA a dime.
