It wouldn&#8217;t increase employment because it would drive away other jobs.\nIt wouldn&#8217;t even save the state money because private prisons aren&#8217;t actually cheaper.\nThey pretend to be cheaper by paying fewer guards per prisoner,\nwhich increases risk of inmate violence and escapes.\nEven if it opened, it would be at risk of closing,\nbecause we can no longer afford to lock up so many people.\nThe Georgia legislature is considering sentencing reform,\nand the Georgia prison population\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/03\/georgia-prison-population-plummetting.html\">\nis already plummetting.<\/a>\n<li>\nIt competes with education. It costs far more to imprison somebody than it would\nto educate them.\nGeorgia spends $1 billion a year on the prison system.\nWe the taxpayers can&#8217;t afford to pay for that while public education is\nunder increasing budgetary pressure.\n<li>\nPublic policy and religious groups from the ACLU to the NAACP to Grover Norquist&#8217;s\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/04\/one-of-the-ways-we-save-money-is-not-build-new-prisons-grover-norquist.html\">\nAmericans for Tax Reform<\/a>\noppose\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/03\/aclu-and-60-policy-and-religious-groups-ask-states-to-reject-ccas-prison-privatization-offer.html\">\nCCA&#8217;s attempt to buy state prisons.<\/a>\nAs\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/04\/one-of-the-ways-we-save-money-is-not-build-new-prisons-grover-norquist.html\">\na wide array of religious groups put it:<\/a>\n<blockquote>\nThe undersigned faith organizations urge you to decline this dangerous\nand costly invitation.\n<\/blockquote>\nWe can oppose CCA&#8217;s attempt to build a new private prison here.\n<li>\nIf you will graduate from VSU soon, do you want to work for a prison?\nIf you have children, do you want them to work for a good business instead?\nDo you want to live in a prison colony?\n<\/ul>\nIf you don&#8217;t want the private prison, here are some things you can do:\n<ul>\n<li>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/topics\/incarceration\/protest\/\">\nJoin us today<\/a> at 5PM on Dasher-Johnson Road at the corner of US 84 East\nand Inner Perimeter.\nBring your car, truck, motorcycle, or bicycle, and help us drive the point home to\nthe Industrial Authority.\n<li>\nSign the\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.change.org\/petitions\/andrea-schruijer-executive-director-for-the-board-stop-the-cca-private-prison-aka-project-excel\">\npetition.<\/a>\n<li>\nSpeak at the Valdosta City Council meeting Thursday\nor at the Lowndes County Commission meeting next Tuesday.\nThey&#8217;re both\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/02\/valdosta-mayor-and-council-are-implicated-in-the-private-prison-john-s-quarterman-vcc-2012-02-23.html\">\nimplicated in this private prison decision.<\/a>\n<li>\nWrite a letter to the editor.\n<li>\nI&#8217;m sure other people can think of many other things.\n<\/ul>\nCCA cares about\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/02\/cca-cares-about-public-acceptance-of-the-companys-services.html\">\n&#8220;public acceptance of the Company&#8217;s services&#8221;<\/a>.\nIf we show enough public opposition, we can\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/topics\/incarceration\/protest\/\">\nDrive Away CCA!<\/a>\n<p>\n-jsq\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Today at 5PM, help Drive Away CCA!
