{"id":1034,"date":"2012-03-08T09:20:51","date_gmt":"2012-03-08T14:20:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2012\/03\/vsu-health-sciences-much-better-than-a-private-prison.html"},"modified":"2012-03-08T09:20:51","modified_gmt":"2012-03-08T14:20:51","slug":"vsu-health-sciences-much-better-than-a-private-prison","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2012\/03\/vsu-health-sciences-much-better-than-a-private-prison.html","title":{"rendered":"VSU Health Sciences: much better than a private prison"},"content":{"rendered":"I hate to agree with the VDT but Health Sciences at VSU would be\ngood for the community.\nIf we weren&#8217;t spending so many state tax dollars locking people up,\nwe&#8217;d be able to afford that more easily.\nAnd it turns out the Georgia House found the money.\n<p>\nStaff Writer editorialized yesterday,\n<a href=\"http:\/\/valdostadailytimes.com\/opinion\/x579806259\/A-ray-of-hope-for-VSU-project\">A ray of hope for VSU project<\/a>,\n<blockquote>\nAmid the lost homes of this past weekend&#8217;s tornado and severe\nstorms, South Georgia could use an infusion of hope.\n<p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.valdosta.edu\/\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\"   src=\"http:\/\/www.valdosta.edu\/element\/images\/3.0\/VState_Metallic_Square_BG.png\"><\/a>\nGood news came Monday with word that the Valdosta State University\nHealth Sciences and Business Administration building has a renewed\nshot at becoming reality.\n<p>\nEarlier this year, the $23.5 million project was assumed dead.\nThough its inclusion had been expected, the building was not part of\nthe 2012 state budget.\n<\/blockquote>\nLater that day it was back in the proposed 2013 Georgia budget.\nDavid Rodock wrote today for the VDT,\n<a href=\"http:\/\/valdostadailytimes.com\/local\/x261021959\/Funding-for-new-VSU-building-approved\">\nFunding for new VSU building approved<\/a>,\n\n<!--more-->\n<blockquote>\nAt approximately 12:15 p.m. Wednesday, the state House of\nRepresentatives approved the Fiscal Year 2013 general budget 151-21,\nwhich will include $23.5 million in funding for the VSU building.\nThe total FY13 budget is currently projected at $19.3 billion.\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\nIt will take more money than that:\n<blockquote>\nVSU requests $32 million from the state&#8217;s FY13 capital\nappropriations and $3.8 million in FY14 to complete the project. The\nstate Senate will need to include an additional $8 million for the\nproject to increase the chances of Deal passing the budget.\n<p>\nVSU received approximately $400,000 from the U.S. Department of\nHealth and Human Services for initial planning and $2.8 million for\narchitectural design from the Georgia Legislature in FY11.\n<\/blockquote>\nAnd if all that happens, there will be more health-related jobs here,\nand more graduates prepared to fill them.\n<p>\nIt works both ways.\nIf the Industrial Authority would bring in more health-related jobs,\nit would be easier to get funding for such an educational project.\n<p>\n-jsq\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"I hate to agree with the VDT but Health Sciences at VSU would be good for the community.
