\r\n\r\n<\/a>\r\nAnd we hear he’s angry because he thinks we called him an “angry white man”.\r\nActually,\r\n\r\nwhat I said<\/a> (also here<\/a>,\r\nhere<\/a>,\r\nand here<\/a>) was:\r\n

\r\nAs an old white man, even I find it impressive how much this area is run by old white men.\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n\r\n

\r\nCurious that someone would be angry about what we didn’t say.\r\nMaybe he just heard what somebody erroneously told him we said.\r\nThat happens when somebody volunteers for public office.\r\nWhich is why I applaud anyone who steps up to volunteer.\r\n

\r\nBesides, it’s not the appointees we’re criticising.\r\nIt’s the Lowndes County Commission we’re criticising:\r\nall<\/em> its appointments to the Greater Lowndes Planning Commission\r\nare old white men.\r\n

\r\nNow, I have nothing against old white men, being one myself.\r\nThe person I like to quote the most,\r\n\r\nBen Franklin<\/a>, was an old white man when he said some of\r\nhis most quotable stuff, like:\r\n

\r\n“Our critics are our friends, they show us our faults.”\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

\r\nOops, that’s Bill Clinton’s version. He’s another old white man.\r\nHere’s Old Ben’s original version, written when he was already 50:\r\n

\r\n“Love your Enemies, for they tell you your Faults.”\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

\r\nAnd I can see by \r\nour critic’s law firm bio<\/a> that he’s younger than me. Young enough to be my son,\r\nbut at my age that still makes him an old white man.\r\nAnd by the longer\r\n\r\nresume he provided the Commission<\/a>\r\n(that took an open records request to get<\/a> that board packet so you can see it)\r\nhe seems eminently qualified for the Planning Commission.\r\nAs no doubt are all the other county appointees.\r\n

\r\nWhich still leaves the main point:\r\nwhy can’t the county find anybody to appoint who is maybe a tad different?\r\nOther people who weren’t even considered may be just as qualified.\r\nMaybe the current appointees and elected officials just don’t know\r\nmany likely appointees who aren’t old white men.\r\nMaybe if they actually advertised open positions in advance\r\nso people would know to apply to them, they might get more applications.\r\nThey could even use that snazzy new website they’re already paying\r\nfor for several months now but we haven’t seen yet to post board packets\r\nso people could see who was applying.\r\n

\r\nMeanwhile, I welcome any new reader to LAKE!\r\n
