\nI asked Lowndes County Commission Chair and Georgia Department\nof Corrections (GDOC) board member Ashley Paulk if he had heard whether\nthe private prison contract had been extended past yesterday’s\ndeadline.\nHe had not.\n\n<\/a>\nHowever, he did volunteer that he had asked the GDOC board whether\nthey had had any discussion about such a prison and they had not.\nFurther, GDOC just last year\n\napproved a CCA prison in Jenkins County, Georgia,<\/a>\nso why would another one be built here?\n\nPrison populations are decreasing in Georgia,<\/a> Paulk said.\nHe even said, “It’s like the biomass situation,”\nin that there’s no business model.\nIt was Ashley Paulk who \nsignaled the end of the biomass project.<\/a>\nAnd he already signaled the end of the private prison project\n\non the front page of the VDT<\/a>\nand\n\n\n<\/a>\n\nhe told Eames Yates of WCTV 29 Feb 2012,<\/a>\n

\nUntil you have a customer, you won’t see a prison,\nand they don’t have a customer.\n<\/blockquote>\nHe said several times yesterday\nhe did not expect the private prison to be built.\nAnd he went beyond what he had said before in explicitly likening\nthe private prison project to the biomass project.\n

\nAfter last Thursday’s Valdosta City Council meeting, two different Valdosta\nCity Council members and Mayor John Gayle all told me they had talked\nto various people and they didn’t expect CCA’s private prison to be built.\n

\nI hope they’re all correct about that.\n

\nBut we all still wait for the Industrial Authority to tell us.\nThey’re missing a huge potential positive PR opportunity\nby not holding a big press conference and taking credit for\nending the private prison.\nThey still could do that this morning.\n

\n\n\n\nOr they could keep claiming that\ncommunity activism has no effect,<\/a>\neven though it is activism that got both of those projects in the news and\ngot people like Ashley Paulk to speak out.\nMaybe the Industrial Authority likes people to laugh at them.\nMe, I’d prefer an Industrial Authority that stood up for the people of this community.\n
