\r\nA reader wondered how\r\n\r\nNova Scotia’s fracking ban<\/a> would result in\r\nsafer oil and gas company drilling operations instead of just\r\nbalkanizing the world into fracking permitted and prohibited zones.\r\nActually, Energy Minister Andrew Younger said:\r\n

\r\n“This way, people will know before it’s allowed — if it’s ever\r\nallowed — there will be a full debate in the Legislature.”\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

\r\n\r\nAnd the panel report that was the proximate cause of the ban,\r\nby the\r\nNova Scotia Hydraulic Fracturing review<\/a>,\r\nled by\r\n\r\nPresident Dr. David Wheeler<\/a>,\r\nexplicitly is for:\r\n

\r\n

\r\n<\/a>\r\n…an independent review and public engagement process to explore the\r\nsocial, economic, environmental, and health implications of\r\nhydraulic fracturing practices and their associated wastewater\r\nstreams.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

\r\nThis will be a chance for the fossil fuel industry to demonstrate\r\nsafe methods of drilling.\r\nWhich is something they didn’t do before they started fracking.\r\n

\r\nIf there are any safe methods of fracking, which I doubt.\r\nBut come on, oil and gas industry, here’s your opportunity!\r\n

\r\n\r\nMeanwhile, solar power is already\r\n\r\ncheaper than any other\r\nform of energy<\/a>\r\n\r\n including natural gas<\/a> and getting still cheaper,\r\nand\r\n\r\nsolar jobs already (a year ago) outnumber non-managerial\r\noil and gas extraction jobs in the U.S.<\/a>,\r\n\r\n<\/a>\r\nsolar \r\nhas already increased deployment more in two years than is projected for shale gas in the next 28 years<\/a>,\r\nso we can also\r\njust get on with deploying faster, cleaner, cheaper solar power\r\nuses half the acreage as pipelines<\/a> without eminent domain,\r\ndoesn’t need water for pressure testing or cooling<\/a>,\r\nand brings jobs right here<\/a> where we need them.\r\n\r\nSolar will overtake everything in less than a decade<\/a>,\r\nas former FERC Chair Jon Wellinghoff predicted a year ago.\r\n
